SPRINGFIELD — Allie Turner is headed to the Bluegrass State in 2010.
And she’s taking her sweet jumper with her.
The Greenon High School senior has verbally committed to play basketball at Division I Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky.
“I’m very excited,” Turner said. “It’s always been a dream of mine (to play D-I hoops). I’m glad it finally came true.”
Turner, a 5-foot-6 guard, averaged 29.4 points per game last season en route to being named both Clark County Miss Basketball and the 2008-2009 News-Sun All-Area Girls Basketball Player of the Year.
She shot 44.2 percent from the field, 38.1 percent from the 3-point line and 84.1 percent from the free-throw line.
Morehead State University, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, went 17-14 last season under second-year coach Mike Bradbury.
Turner said a great relationship with the Morehead coaches and Morehead’s beautiful campus were the main reasons behind her decision.
“The coaches were so great,” Turner said. “I really feel like I fit in well with the team.”
She also feels she can play right away for the Eagles.
“I really wanted to go to a school where I could contribute my first couple of years instead of sitting the bench,” Turner said. “I really want to play.”
Turner was happy to get the decision out of the way before the season starts. She needs 544 points to reach 2,000 for her career.
She’s spent the last three years playing soccer during the fall season, but decided to focus on basketball this year.
“It’s giving me a lot more time to get in the gym and shoot on my own,” Turner said. “I go to all the games and cheer the team on. It’s definitely hard. I miss it.”
