NEW CARLISLE — After a scoreless first half, Bellefontaine dominated the Greenon High School boys soccer team and beat the Knights 2-0 in a Division II sectional final at Tecumseh on Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Anthony Vicario opened the scoring by getting a piece of the ball with the Greenon goalie and another defender in front of him. He deflected a cross into the net at the 35:01 mark of the second half.

Bellefontaine took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Robbie Ball at the 26:57 mark. Greenon had few good chances after that.

“I think we got beat to the ball a little bit,” Greenon coach Jeff Nickles said. “We probably could have worked the ball a little bit better on offense.”

Bellefontaine and Greenon tied 3-3 on Sept. 14 in their lone regular-season meeting.

“The 3-3 tie, what I took from that was that either team could have won that game, or either team could have lost that game,” Nickles said. “Going into this game, we knew it would be the same way. We knew it would be an even match. Unfortunately, it just didn’t go our way tonight.”

Greenon, the No. 3 seed, advanced to the sectional final by beating Northwestern 3-0 on Saturday, Oct. 24. That marked the seventh victory in a row for the Knights, all by at least three goals.

Greenon, the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division champion, finished the season 11-5-1.

“Got to like the league title. You can’t be disappointed with that,” Nickles said. “I wish we would have gone a little farther in the tournament, but we’re proud of the guys.”

Bellefontaine, the No. 2 seed, opened the sectional tournament by beating Greenville 2-0. It then ousted Milton-Union 2-1 on Saturday.

The Chieftains are now 15-3-1. They will play Alter at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at Franklin High School. Alter advanced to the district final by beating Bellbrook 2-1 on Tuesday.
