The winner of a three-team race in the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division is likely going to take several weeks to decide.
Graham (7-6) and Urbana (10-4) are tied atop the CBC Mad River at 6-1, while Greenon (11-3) is one game back at 5-2.
“It’s definitely going to come down to the wire,” said Urbana High School coach Bill Moss. “I’d say Graham is in the driver’s seat.”
The Falcons beat Urbana 64-60 on Jan. 16, then beat Greenon 37-35 on Saturday to move into a tie for first-place.
They’ve won the title in each of the last two seasons, but faced big losses to their roster this season. They’re led by senior guard Taylor Dyke (18.8 points per game).
“I’d like to think we’ve shocked some people this year,” said Falcons coach Bruce Vanover. “We’re basically a revamped team. I give the girls a lot of credit for how they’ve played.”
They face remaining league games against Indian Lake, Urbana and Northwestern, and won’t take any game for granted.
“We can’t look past Indian Lake because they’re playing hard,” Vanover said. “Northwestern is scrappy. For us, it’s deeper than Urbana and Greenon. If you don’t go out every night and play well, you can get beat.”
The Hillclimbers and Knights will face off on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday at 1:30 p.m., but was postponed.
Moss said his team needs to defend better to have a chance at the league title. They face Kenton Ridge in a rivalry game at 7:30 p.m. tonight, the beginning of four straight road games. They also travel to Greenon and Graham next week.
Greenon needs a win over Urbana and some help to win the Mad River Division. The Knights wrap up a seven-game road trip tonight against Tecumseh. They’ll have five straight home games to end the season, including league games with Urbana, Northwestern and Ben Logan.
“We’re still not out of it,” Falkenbach said. “I like where we’re at.”
If the wins and losses fall a certain way, all three teams could share the league title. The same thing could happen in the CBC Kenton Trail with Tecumseh, Tippecanoe and Kenton Ridge.
Record pace: Urbana’s Trischa Lacy is currently on pace to set the OHSAA unofficial state record for made 3-pointers in a season.
Lacy has made 74 3-pointers in 14 games this season. The record of 106 was set by Canfield’s Jenny Kulics in 1991-92.
She needs 15 more to break the area record of 89 set by Kenton Ridge’s Stephanie Bennett in 2002-03.
Lacy is second in scoring in the CBC at 22.6 points per game.
School history: On Monday, Emmanuel senior Megan Ball tallied her second triple-double of the season, the only person in school history to achieve the feat. She had 23 points, 13 rebounds and 13 steals in the Lions’ 52-23 victory over Middletown Christian. Emmanuel, which has won six of its last seven games, is 7-8 and 3-5 in the Metro Buckeye Conference.
