JAMESTOWN — The Greeneview High School boys basketball team took a five-game winning streak into the Christmas break. The Rams haven’t lost since their season opener, 43-39 to Chaminade Julienne.
The Rams had Saturday and Sunday off and returned to practice Monday morning, beginning preparation for the McDonald’s Holiday Tournament at Miami Trace on Wednesday and Friday.
“We had to work them a little hard,” coach Bill Green said on Monday. “They were sluggish to say the least. That’s to be expected. This group is mostly juniors and seniors.
“They’ve been through this before. They know what to expect. They know which practices we go hard and which ones we back off. They’re usually good at getting themselves ready to go.”
After Friday, the Rams don’t play again until Jan. 6 against Northeastern. Then the season gets busy with four games in 11 days, the final one in that stretch being a Jan. 16 matchup against Norcross (Ga.) in the Flyin’ to the Hoop Invitational at Fairmont. Norcross is the defending Class 5A state champions. That’s the big-school division in Georgia.
“They didn’t give us any breaks when it came to that,” Green said. “Our kids wanted to play in it. We gave up a home game to play in it. We only have eight home games. The kids have watched it and seen it. They’re all for it. It’ll be fun for them.”
Postponement: A water main break at Urbana High School forced the postponement of tonight’s game against Springfield to Feb. 4. The freshman game will be played at 4 p.m., junior varsity at 6 p.m. and the varsity game at 7:30 p.m.
That was Springfield’s only scheduled game this week, and it won’t play again until Jan. 3 at Tecumseh.
Urbana athletic director Chuck Raterman said the gym can still be used, but there is no access to water in the building, and the problem won’t be fixed until Thursday.
Urbana’s girls basketball home game against Graham on Wednesday has been postponed to Jan. 10.
Big game: Two of the best teams in the Central Buckeye Conference meet on Thursday when Urbana visits Bellefontaine. The Hillclimbers are 4-1, and Bellefontaine is 4-2.
Bellefontaine won 56-46 last year, and Urbana won 42-40 two seasons ago.
