Cedarville junior Jordan Reese shot a 77 and was the No. 1 individual qualifier at the Division III district boys golf tournament at Weatherwax Golf Course in Middletown on Thursday, earning his first state tourney berth.

Reese shot a 37 on the front nine, then a 40 on the back nine. Brooks Curry of Middletown Christian also had a 77, and beat Reese in a one-hole playoff for the honor of overall tournament medalist.

“I knew I had a shot,” said Reese. “I hit a lot better today than in practice this week. I made a few mistakes at the end, but I’m still going to state. My driving was bad, but my short game and putting is what saved me.

“It feels like finally all the practice has paid off a little bit.”

There was a four-man playoff for the final state individual berth of boys who shot 80, including freshman Nick Sims of West Liberty-Salem. But Sims was eliminated after the first hole.

WLS shot 350 as a team, tied for seventh. Ryan Meister shot an 82, Jacob Rutan had an 90 and Ethan McBean added a 98.

The top two teams advanced, Lehman (332) and Middletown Christian (333).

Triad senior Drue LeMaster shot an 87. Catholic Central freshman Sam Juergens fired a 98. Emmanuel Christian sophomore Ethan Cotter carded a 99.

The D-III tourney will be at Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course next Friday and Saturday.

Girl soccer: Northeastern moved ahead of West Liberty-Salem in the Ohio Heritage Conference standings with a 2-1 vicotry.
