BROOKVILLE — In the last game of her high school career, Cedarville High School senior Emily Sheridan needed eight points to surpass the 1,000 career points mark.

As the seconds ticked away in the Indians 53-27 loss to Covington in a Division IV sectional final game at Brookville High School on Saturday, Sheridan crept closer and closer to 1,000.

With 12 seconds remaining and Sheridan sitting at six points, the senior found herself alone in the corner behind the 3-point line.

On the final shot of her career, the senior nailed the trey to finish her career with 1,001 points. It was the fourth 3-pointer she’d hit all season.

“It feels really great,” Sheridan said. “My teammates helped me out, feeding me the ball at the end. Without them, I wouldn’t have gotten it.”

Emily Aviles had 10 points and Sheridan added nine for the Indians, who finished the season 9-13.

The Indians struggled from the field against the Buccaneers (15-8), shooting just 4-for-29 on their 2-point field goals.

“Tonight wasn’t our shooting night,” said Indians coach Ralph Grant said. “Part of that was their defense, and part of it was we didn’t get any shots to fall. We had some good looks at the beginning, they just didn’t go.

“You’re going to have those nights, you just hope it’s not in the sectional championship, but it was.”

Covington led 16-5 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 29-15 at the half. They opened the second half with a 13-0 run to put the game away.

“They did a nice job,” Grant said. “I commend them. They hurt us inside. I knew that was going to be a struggle.”

The crowd erupted when Sheridan’s last field-goal hit nothing but net, helping her surpass her final career milestone.

“It’s great,” Grant said. “Coming into the season, I really didn’t know if she could do it. She’s started since she was a freshman. She improved her game, really blossomed. I’m proud of her effort and her hard work. It’s a great accomplishment.”

Grant was happy with his team’s performance. They advanced to the sectional final for the second straight season.

“I was real encouraged,” Grant said. “We probably did better than I thought we would. I was proud of the girls. They really played hard and we won more games than most people thought we could. It was a good season.”
