SPRINGFIELD — Jordan Reese had one of those days golfers dream about. The junior tied a Cedarville High School record last Monday, shooting a 32 for nine holes at Locust Hills.

“It was my best score,” Reese said. “I had shot 33 two or three times in practice. I knew I could do it. I got very close a few times, just missing a couple short putts here and there. Finally Monday, I just made those putts I had been missing. It felt like everything was falling.”

Reese made a 40-foot birdie putt on No. 3 to get the round going. He’s now averaging 38.08 per nine holes. He shot a 68 early in the season at a quad meet at Locust Hills and finished second at the Ridge Golf Classic, a 19-team event at Kitty Hawk.

Reese has already had a great career. He won the Ohio Heritage Conference meet as a freshman and just missed out on being named player of the year. He qualified for the district meet as a freshman, only to miss out as a sophomore because of one bad round.

“Last year, I choked,” Reese said. “I think I shot 85. I wasn’t even close. I really struggled last year with some things, mentally and with my swing. I was just frustrated last year. It’s motivated me to turn things around this year.”

His uncle Jeff Gilbert is coaching the team this year for the first time.

“I first saw him play when he was still pretty young,” Gilbert said. “He hit the ball pretty far for a 10-year-old. He’s always had a pretty swing. He works hard at it. He wants to be good. Since he was a little kid, he’s always wanted to do this.”

Away from school, Reese’s coach is John Wilkinson, from the Down Under Par Golf Academy on Leffel Lane in Springfield.

“He’s really helped turn around my mental game,” Reese said. “Anytime I’m struggling with anything, we’ll talk.”
