DAYTON — Early in the season, the Dragons would have fallen behind and stayed behind.

Early in the season, the Dragons would have had trouble scoring after the fifth inning.

Early in the season, the Dragons would have given Fort Wayne a 3-0 lead and started planning for the next day.

It’s not early in the season anymore.

For the second straight night, Wednesday, July 1, the Dragons trailed the TinCaps 3-0 and were still down 6-4 in the eighth when they scored twice on two hits and three walks.

They didn’t win, as they did Tuesday night, but at least the Dragons showed comeback potential in an 8-6 loss as the TinCaps scored twice in the ninth.

The Dragons registered just two hits in the first five innings, one originally called an error on a grounder to short by Andrew Means, which brought in a run. The second hit was shortstop Miguel Rojas’ line single to right in the fifth.

In the sixth, the Dragons scored three times, twice on second baseman Cody Puckett’s 12th homer, but missed another chance when Byron Wiley was thrown out at the plate on a Kevin Coddington hit to right.

Fort Wayne kept the lead and scored again before Dayton tied the game in the eighth with three walks driving in two runs.

Only the ninth spoiled the game for the Dragons, but not the evening. They tied; they just couldn’t win.

Why in the world did Benzinger wave Wiley home in the sixth? He was out by so much the that he had time to take two steps before plowing into the catcher, who was 5-10 feet up the line. Benzinger did the same thing to Joey Votto, waving him home and having him thrown out by a dozen feet or so.

BTW, how is the Fort Wayne catcher? He took a pretty good lick from Wiley and had to leave the game.
