Reds’ Nix becomes free agent

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Reds made some procedural moves Friday, Nov. 20, to set their 40-man roster, adding seven young players and ultimately losing outfielder Laynce Nix.

Nix, who batted .239 with 26 doubles, 15 home runs and 46 RBIs last season in 309 at-bats, refused an outright assignment to the minors and elected free agency. He still could sign with the Reds, though.

Nix, 29, is a career .237 hitter with Texas, Milwaukee and the Reds.

Added to the roster were seven former Dayton Dragons: Right-handers Enerio Del Rosario, Logan Ondrusek and Jordan Smith, left-handers Philippe Valiquette and Travis Wood, infielder Chris Valaika and outfielder Chris Heisey.

Heisey batted .347 at Carolina and .278 at Louisville, combining for 22 homers and 77 RBI. He’s thought to have an outside shot at making the team in the spring.

In other moves, pitcher Daryl Thompson was removed from the roster and catcher Craig Tatum was claimed off waivers by the Baltimore Orioles. Tatum, known more for his defense, batted .162 in 68 at-bats as a rookie.

I still think this guy is for more, he looks strong and has showed an excel defense in all three outfield position. Given his condition of lefty hitter and some pop, he should look to get contact in pace. He's suffered so many injuries that maybe he won't get anyway, ever.

Doesn't matter who's coming up thru the Reds' system. Nix isn't even a mediocre hack. No loss, don't re-sign him. Tatum couldn't hit a ball off of a tee. No loss there, either & he should fit right in w/ the loser O's.

No!...Nooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol...who cares. As long as Dusty is calling the shots, you will need veterans who know how to handle themselves because Dusty is clueless with young players and game management.

Nix is expendable due to the rise of Heisey. The kid had a great year in the minors followed up with the Arizona Fall League where he was the best player. He's #1 in left field going into the season.

Nix did a good job of filling in for the injured guys. I think this guy has a lot of talent and hasn't reach his full potential. I'd like to see him stick around as a reserve outfielder.
