CEDARVILLE — Cedarville University has moved one step closer to earning full-fledged NCAA Division II status.
On Friday, the NCAA awarded Cedarville a provisional year in the membership process. They’re hoping to join the NCAA for the 2012-13 school year.
“It’s exciting, but we’ve still got some things to do next year,” said Cedarville Athletic Director Alan Geist. “The best thing is seeing how everybody has pitched in on this. Throughout the campus — the registrar’s office, admissions, financial aid — everyone had a part in this.”
The NCAA monitored the school’s progress over the last year, and gave it a positive mark for the second year in a row. They’ve worked on joining the NCAA for almost three years.
This school year, they’ll have to follow all NCAA regulations.
“The NAIA days are done,” Geist said. “This will all become official in September.”
Next year, Cedarville will compete in the NCAA D-II as an independent. They won’t play in the postseason, but will compete in the National Christian College Athletic Association tournaments. They’re still in the process of creating a new conference of D-II schools in Ohio.
Next year at this time, Geist is hoping to get an even better phone call.
“That’ll be the most important one,” Geist said.
