WSU baseball scores another upset but falls out of Top 25

The Wright State baseball team’s stay in the Top 25 has ended, but the Raiders’ run of upsets continued over the weekend.

WSU beat No. 5 South Carolina 5-1 Sunday in the final of a three-game series that began with a 4-3 loss Friday night, followed by a 10-5 setback Saturday.

The Raiders (3-3) entered the weekend ranked No. 25 in the Baseball America poll, their first appearance in school history, after taking two of three from then No. 15 Clemson opening weekend.

The latest upset came on the strength of a solid performance by starting pitcher Danny Sexton, who limited the Gamecocks (4-2) to one unearned run on six hits through seven innings with four strikeouts and two walks.

Matt Morrow’s two-run home run in the third inning gave WSU the lead for good. Morrow added an RBI groundout in the fifth and an RBI single in the eighth. Zach Weatherford drove in the other run and finished 2 for 4 with a double. Seth Gray also had a pair of hits and scored twice.

WSU returns to action Tuesday at Gardner-Webb.
