West, Alter, Tri-Village 2nd in final girls polls

Lakota West (Division I), Alter (D-II) and Tri-Village (D-IV) were No. 2 in their respective divisions of the final Associated Press girls high school basketball state polls that were released on Tuesday.

West (20-2) couldn’t overcome all 23 first-place votes that top-ranked Newark (22-0) received and trailed by a final margin of 230-200. West won the D-I state title in 2015 and defeated then-top ranked Newark in the state semifinals.

Alter (20-2), the two-time defending D-II state champion, trailed poll champ Ottawa-Glandorf (19-0) by 22 points. Glandorf had a 19-3 advantage on Alter in first-place votes. Alter defeated Glandorf in the 2016 state final. Glandorf also lost to Versailles in the 2015 D-III state championship.

Tri-Village (20-1) trailed top-ranked Berlin Hiland (20-1) by 40 points. Both teams suffered their only losses last week. Hiland had 17 first-place votes and Tri-Village two. A perennial small-school state power, Hiland has been to 14 state final fours and has won four state titles.

The D-III poll champ was Cincinnati Summit Country Day (22-0).

Springfield-area basketball was represented by Tecumseh (20-2) at No. 5 in D-I and West Liberty-Salem (21-1) No. 12 in D-III.

State-wide media that subscribe to the Associated Press are eligible to vote for the weekly polls. The final boys state polls will be released next week.
