Urban Meyer grateful for grandson, playoff berth

Ohio State Buckeyes coach gets double dose of good news

Urban Meyer watched the College Football Playoff selection show on a TV in the maternity ward at Riverside Hospital on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center 90 minutes after the Ohio State Buckeyes learned they will play Clemson at 7 p.m. Dec. 31 at the Fiesta Bowl in the national semifinals, Meyer told the story of his long and happy day. His daughter Nicki gave birth to a boy, Troy, and Meyer is a grandfather for the first time.

“Last night, we were just going to have dinner, and (Nicki) was going to come over,” Meyer said. “We got a phone call. (His wife) Shelley said, ‘It looks like things are going.’”

The baby was born at 5:30 a.m. Sunday. Meyer said he was thankful for the gift of a grandson and for the news about his team. He said it was an anxious night waiting and wondering because, he said, there were six or seven teams worthy of playing in the playoff.

“You just never know until you know,” he said.
