Springfield High’s Scott wins district long jump

Springfield High School junior Quincy Scott knew what not to do with one final long jump remaining and a district championship on the line: Don’t lose it.

“I tried not to freak out,” said Scott following a clutch final leap that clinched the long jump during Wednesday’s Division I district track and field meet at Wayne. “I’ve been in situations like that before. It’s on me. All it takes is one jump to win it.”

IN THE LONG RUN: Arcanum boys excel in D-III district

The long jump was one of just a few field event finals and the only running final was the 4x800-meter relay. All the other top qualifiers will return to Wayne for Friday’s finals. The top four in each event advance to next week’s D-I regional at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium.

Scott trailed Bellefontaine junior and defending district champion Dezmin Lyburtus by a couple inches with that final jump remaining. A significant tail wind had most runners off in their sprint approach, including Scott. He finally hit the board perfectly on his last attempt and produced a winning leap of 22 feet, 1.75 inches.

“I wasn’t hitting the board,” he said. “On the last jump my first spike hit the board and that little bit of board gave me bounce.”

Lyburtus was second by less than one inch (22-1).

GWOC: Scott, Smith, relays lead Wildcats to sixth

There should be plenty of pep in Scott’s step entering Friday’s finals. He posted the fastest 100 qualifying time (11.28), was second in 200 qualifying (22.30) and anchored the 4x100 relay (43.03), which also advanced with the second-best time.

Springfield junior hurdler Dyier Smith was third in 110 highs finals qualifying (15.03) and sophomore Austin Tyree advanced in the 300 hurdles in seventh (41.19).

Joining Smith and Scott on the 4x100 relay were Jacob Yost and Mike Brown. Diante Lesperance teamed with Brown, Yost and Smith in the 4x200 relay (1:31.65), which advanced with the fifth-best clocking.

• Girls winners were Troy in the 4x800 relay (9:54.90), Piqua’s Ashley Ho in the high jump (5-4) and Troy freshman Lenea Browder in the shot put (43-2). Other boys winners were the Wayne 4x800 relay (8:17.02), Wayne’s Joel Crain in the discus (149-9) and Greenvile vaulter A.J. Frens (15-7).

• The first day of the D-II boys and girls district meets are Thursday at Dayton’s Welcome Stadium and Graham. D-I district finals are Friday at Wayne and Dayton. D-II and D-III district finals are Saturday.
