Springfield’s Davis named first team All-Ohio in Division I

Springfield High School senior Danny Davis was named Division I first team All-Ohio and Kaleb Wesson of Westerville South was chosen Ohio Mr. Basketball by the Associated Press on Wednesday.

A four-year starter, Davis had the best of those four years as a senior. The 6-foot-3 guard led Springfield in most offensive categories, averaging a team-high 18.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.8 steals.

Springfield (23-4 overall) won an outright Greater Western Ohio Conference National East Division title, going 11-1. That was the Wildcats’ first divisional title since 2005 as Springfield South. Cincinnati LaSalle defeated Springfield in a D-I regional semifinal, 47-46.

Davis was a D-I second team All-Ohioan as a junior. Also a football standout, he has signed with the University of Wisconsin as a receiver. As a senior he also was a D-I second team All-Ohioan as a running back.

Wesson, a 6-10 senior, averaged 22.4 points and 10.9 rebounds and also was named the D-I player of the year. A three-year starter, he led Westerville South to a D-I state title last season and a state runner-up in 2015, losing to Wayne in the championship. He has signed with Ohio State, which continues a family pipeline. His father Keith Wesson played at OSU and his brother Andre is a freshman for the Buckeyes.

Kaleb Wesson succeeds Xavier Simpson (Lima Senior) as Mr. Basketball.

Cincinnati Moeller coach Carl Kremer and Tim Debevec of Massillon Jackson shared D-I co-coach of the year honors. Fittingly, both have guided their teams into this week’s D-I state final four. Moeller (27-0) plays Pickerington Central in Friday’s D-I state semifinal (5:15 p.m.) and Massillon Jackson (26-2) plays Lakewood St. Edward (23-5) in the other semi (8:30 p.m.).

GWOC players Samari Curtis (Xenia), Andre Gordon (Sidney) and Keegan Saben (Centerville) all were named D-I All-Ohio honorable mention.

Those were the final postseason honors to be awarded by the Associated Press. Divisions II and III were announced on Tuesday and D-IV on Monday.

Teams were chosen based on all-district teams that were selected based on state-wide media panels. Players were nominated by coaches and media.
