Sports Today: Ohio State’s surprise, NBA trade deadline dud, NASCAR’s back and baseball games begin

The game of basketball looks a lot easier when you're making shots, as Ohio State reminded us Thursday night while dominating Wisconsin.

Naturally after I ragged on them for two straight days they hit the Value City Arena floor looking like a different team against the Badgers, who didn't seem to have much juice and missed a fair amount of shots they probably make more often than not.

This game was also a reminder how much different the Buckeyes would be if they had a consistent, reliable point guard.

Coach Thad Matta conceded making shots helps, but he also thought his team got some pep in its step via a post trap that scrambled things up for them defensively and seemed to bother the Badgers’ big men…

The NBA trade deadline came and went without the big one hitting.

Former Ohio State star Jared Sullinger was traded from the Raptors (who are good) to the Suns (who are bad), and the Bulls may have strengthened the Thunder for the playoffs by trading Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott to Oklahoma City, where Russell Westbrook has been a one-man show all year.

No move of Jimmy Butler or Paul George while Magic Johnson stood pat for now in his new position Lakers president of basketball operations…

On the court, there were a couple of familiar sights: LeBron James with a ridiculous blocked shot…

… and Draymond Green trying to kick Blake Griffin during a scramble for a loose ball…

NASCAR is back this weekend with the 59th running of the Daytona 500 and a new points system.

Here are seven things to know about the Great American Race and the return of stock car racing for another year.

The Reds hit the field this afternoon for their first spring training game.

Rookie Davis is set to start for Cincinnati.

There was a bit of bad news this morning as the team announced Dilson Herrera, an infield prospect who could find a spot as a utility man on this team, will not play in the World Baseball Classic because of shoulder inflammation.

He can still hit, though, so he will be able to DH for the Reds.

And here is some good news: MLB.com reports Tony Cingrani has added a cutter in the offseason to go with his sometimes-overpowering four-seam fastball.

Meanwhile, Eugenio Suarez says he wants to improve both his hitting and his English.

I don’t think anyone will be too worried about what language he is speaking if he cuts down on the errors at third base.
