Report: Alter grad, ND QB Malik Zaire to transfer

Alter High School graduate and Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire will transfer.

The junior with the Fighting Irish is expected to meet with coach Brian Kelly on Wednesday morning to announce his intention to leave the program, according to a report from Irish Illustrated. He’s on track to graduate from Notre Dame in December, with a full season of eligibility remaining.

Irish Illustrated reported Florida, Pittsburgh, Wisconsin and Michigan State are “primary contenders” for Zaire.

Notre Dame was 4-8 in 2016 and didn’t qualify for a bowl game, which allows Zaire to visit colleges almost immediately.

Zaire led Notre Dame to an upset over LSU in the 2014 Music City Bowl, replacing starter Everett Golston, who would transfer to Florida State. He threw for over 300 yards in the 2015 season-opener against Texas, but broke his ankle the next week against Virginia and missed the season.

After losing the starting job to DeShone Kizer, Zaire was sent to the bench, except for one start during the season at wide receiver.

In three seasons at Notre Dame, Zaire was 58-of-98 for 816 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. He was Division III Offensive Player of the Year All-Ohio in 2012 at Alter
