Clayton Portz qualifies for Greenbrier Classic

Kenton Ridge graduate Clayton Portz will make his PGA Tour debut at the Greenbrier Classic on Thursday in White Sulphur Springs, W.V.

Portz earned a spot in the event by shooting a 69 in the qualifier Monday at Glade Springs Golf Course in Daniels, W.V. That was one shot behind Y.E. Yang, the 2009 PGA Championship winner.

“This is what I have worked towards for as long as I remember,” Portz wrote on Facebook.

Portz played for Kenton Ridge’s state championship golf team as a senior in 2011. He finished third overall.

Portz played college golf at Northern Kentucky University and finished sixth in the Horizon League championship as a senior in 2016.

Portz qualified for his first Web.com Tour event in April. He shot rounds of 80 and 76 and missed the cut at the United Leasing and Finance in Newburgh, Ind. He also played at the Rust-Oleum Championship in Ivanhoe, Ill., in June.
