Prep Boys Hoops Notes: Urbana, Graham look strong in CBC Mad River

Two teams are emerging as early leaders in the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division.

The Urbana and Graham boys basketball teams are both 4-0 and 2-0 in the division. No other team in the Mad River has a winning record.

Graham leads the 12-team CBC in points allowed (34.8). Urbana is third in points allowed (44.0) and scored (57.5).

Urbana’s Anthony Marino and Zach Stillings combine to average 31.1 points per game. Marino leads the Springfield area in assists (5.8) and Stillings leads the area in blocks (4.3).

Graham’s Nick VanHoose leads the Falcons in points (17.3 per game), and Adam Zook leads the team in assists (3.8), steals (3.5) and rebounds (6.5).

Graham won the past three Mad River Division titles. Urbana finished second the last two years. The two teams will play on Jan. 7, 2011, at Graham, then again on Feb. 11 at Urbana.

Picking it up

Cedarville is the area’s best free-throw shooting team, at 62.3 percent (48-for-77).

Luke Sheridan has made 21-of-27, 77.8 percent. Taylor Kordic has made 14-of-19, 73.7 percent.

Holiday break

The season slows down a little bit with the holiday break and Christmas and New Year’s falling on the weekend.

Most boys teams will be playing tonight, then again on Dec. 28.

Catholic Central hosts Southeastern tonight in an Ohio Heritage Conference game. The last time these two played, Southeastern won 45-43 on Feb. 2.

Around the state

Low scores: Findlay beat Toledo Waite 43-40; Columbus Grove beat Arlington 52-51.

High scores: Cincinnati Taft beat Woodward 94-69; East Cleveland Shaw beat Collinwood 93-89.

Still strong: Dunbar beat Cleveland Hay 78-59 on Saturday to improve to 5-1. Dunbar is the defending Division II state champs, and its only loss this season is to a team from Michigan.
