The Mechanicsburg High School football team’s entrance music — Metallica’s Enter Sandman — provides one of the coolest pre-game traditions in local high school football.

The tradition isn’t new, Indians head coach Kurt Forrest said, but it’s finally loud enough for fans to hear it throughout the stadium.

“We’ve been doing it for about four or five years, but it’s never turned up loud enough for anybody to hear,” Forrest said. “I finally said, ‘Can we get that turned up’?”

The Indians – a perennial playoff team who has won 38 of its last 41 games – walk down a hill from its locker room onto the field at Mechanicsburg Indian Stadium. The walk is a special part of the school’s football tradition, Forrest said.

“When you walk down the hill, slap the rock and Enter Sandman is playing and you get to hold your brother’s hand and raise it high above your head, it’s a special thing here,” he said. “It takes a dedicated, committed young man to get that feeling.

“Our band does a fantastic job and they’re awesome, but it’s been something that’s been playing for so long, but it’s never been loud enough or anyone to hear it,” Forrest said. “We finally got them to turn it up.”
