A.J. Green calls reports of him being unhappy “not true”

Speaking with reporters for the time since being informed in Houston two weeks ago the team was shutting him down due to the hamstring injury he suffered Nov. 20 vs. Buffalo, Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green reiterated Monday what he said through a team spokesman last week, that he is not, nor was he ever, upset with the team.

“No, that was not true,” Green said on locker clean-out day at Paul Brown Stadium. “I was upset that I couldn’t play because I wanted to play. But I believe in the doctors here and the coaches here, and they know what’s best for me. The best decision was not to play because of my high risk of hurting it again and have to get surgery. That’s definitely something I didn’t want to have to do.”

Green said his decision to fly home was not because he was upset, but rather because it was Christmas eve, his first as a father.

“I’ve got a son at home, and I just wanted to be with him, and coach Lewis allowed me to go,” he said.

Green said he pushed his hamstring “all the way” in practice leading up to the Houston game, but the concern doctors had was how it would hold up with opponents hanging on him, which is something that couldn’t be tested in practice.

He also confirmed that he will not participate in the Pro Bowl after playing in the game the last five years.
