Girls basketball programs celebrate 1,000-point scorers

The Southeastern and Northeastern girls basketball teams may be on opposite ends of the Ohio Heritage Conference South Division standings, but the programs had something in common this week.

Northeastern’s Hayley Suchland surpassed 1,000 career points Monday in a loss to Greeneview. On Thursday night, Southeastern’s Maddy McKee also hit 1,000 career points in a matchup against the Jets. McKee hit her milestone with 4:56 left in the fourth quarter when she made the first of two free throws.

McKee, a senior guard, led the Trojans with 24 points and helped the team improve to 15-6 overall with a 70-22 win over Northeastern. She has exactly 1,000 points after Thursday’s victory.

“I had no idea until I actually did it,” McKee said after the game between taking pictures with family and friends. “When I looked over and saw my teammates sitting on the edge of their seats when I was shooting my free throws, I figured it out.”

Suchland went over the mark Tuesday while shooting a free throw and became only the third player in the program’s history to reach the milestone. She scored 18 of the Jets’ 22 points Thursday.

“It was a big crowd (on Monday), which we’re not used to, and everyone that came out was really supportive,” Suchland said. “It’s something I’ll probably never experience again.”

The Trojans jumped to a 17-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and cruised from there. McKee hit four 3-pointers in the first half, then hit several layups and foul shots in the second half.

Southeastern coach P.J. Bertemes said that for all the scoring McKee has done, she’s remained humble.

“She’ll be the first one to tell you that she’s played with a lot of good players, and that it takes the team playing well in order for her to reach this accomplishment,” Bertemes said. “She’s put time into this game. She shoots it very well — she can catch and shoot the basketball as well as anyone we’ve had.”

The Trojans travel to Madison Plains on Saturday and then have a long break before starting tournament play. Southeastern is No. 4 in the Brookville Division IV sectional and will play either Yellow Springs or Bradford in a second-round game on Feb. 22.

“We’ve made a lot of improvements and we’ve started working together a lot better,” McKee said. “I think that our tournament run will be long if we keep working together.”

Northeastern dropped to 5-16 with Thursday’s loss. Suchland said while the Jets had hoped to do better this season, they are pleased with the progress they’ve made. Suchland is a junior, and with most of the team back next season, she’s hopeful Northeastern’s improvement will continue.

We’ve been working hard as a team, and we just need to practice a little harder,” Suchland said.
