Girls Basketball: Kenton Ridge runs away from Eaton in tourney opener

The Kenton Ridge High School girls basketball team looked masterful in the second half of a sectional tournament game against Eaton on Monday night. And the Cougars will have to play like that — and not like the first half — in order to have a long tournament run.

Kenton Ridge ran away in the second half to beat Eaton 78-31 in a Division II sectional opener at Tecumseh’s Reynolds Gymnasium. The fourth-seeded Cougars (15-8) advance to face No. 5 Benjamin Logan in a second-round game on Wednesday.

It didn’t look like the game would turn into blowout in the first half. Anna Black hit a 3-pointer for Eaton with 4:20 left in the second quarter to cut Kenton Ridge’s to 21-15. The Cougars led 34-17 after the first half despite committing 15 turnovers.

“We had better defense in the second half and didn’t turn the ball over as much,” Kenton Ridge coach Ed Foulk said. “I think (Eaton) wore out in the second half, too. They weren’t really ready to run with us for a whole game. But we’ve got to play better against Ben Logan, that’s for sure.”

After Eaton cut the lead to six, Kenton Ridge scored the next seven points on two baskets by Jamari McDavid and a 3 by Desiree Jones to firmly take control.

“We’re used to being in close situations, but there was no panic,” McDavid said. “We just had to come together as a team, talk to each other, not stress and just play.”

McDavid scored four points early in the third quarter to help push the lead over 20, and Kenton Ridge ran away in the fourth with a 23-2 scoring advantage.

Ben Logan (16-7) beat Bellefontaine 58-25 in the first game on Monday at Tecumseh. Neither the Raiders nor the Cougars had played in 11 days before Monday, and they’ll both make the quick turnaround to play at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Kenton Ridge beat Ben Logan 75-55 on the road in a Central Buckeye Conference crossover game on Jan. 21. Foulk said the gap was as close as seven points in the second half in that game before the Cougars ran away late.

“They hit seven 3-pointers in that game,” Foulk said of the first matchup. “We’ll have to hold down there 3’s a little bit more. I think after it close that night, we had a 13-0 run to put it away. That’s how we kind of play. But as long as we can play strong on defense and limit turnovers, we should be in a good situation.”

McDavid led Kenton Ridge with 24 points on Monday, while Mikala Morris scored 20 and Jones added 18.

Eaton finishes with a 6-17 record. The Eagles were led by Emily Dungan, who scored nine.
