Former Flyer Stammen nominated for Act of Valor award

The San Diego Padres honored former Dayton Flyers pitcher Craig Stammen on Sunday, paying tribute to him on the field after he was named a finalist for the 2017 Act of Valor Award.

The award honors pitching great Bob Feller. It recognizes those who support service men and women. The goal of the award is to education “our youth about the valor, commitment and duty to country.” Stammen, a Versailles High School graduate, was one of 12 players from across baseball to be nominated.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Stammen has bought tickets for service members and their families each month. He has also bought them food and souvenirs at Petco Park and given them passes for batting practices.

In his first season with the Padres, Stammen is 2-2 with a 3.25 ERA in 50 relief appearances.
