Dragons’ Siri one away from Midwest League hit record

With a third-inning single to center field Saturday night at Fort Wayne, Dayton Dragons outfielder Jose Siri extended his hitting streak to 34 consecutive games and can tie a 40-year-old Midwest League record with a hit today against the TinCaps.

The record of 35 consecutive games with a hit has been held since 1977 by Tony Toups, who played for Waterloo in the Indians system. Siri’s streak is the longest in professional baseball this season.

A hit Friday by Siri broke a MWL tie with West Michigan catcher Robert Fick, a future Detroit Tiger, who hit safely in 32 straight in 1997.

The Dragons play three more games in Fort Wayne, so if Siri breaks the record, he will do so Monday on the road. Next home game is Wednesday night against the Great Lakes Loons.
