Devin Mesoraco fractures foot, returns to Cincinnati for examination

Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco has a fractured left foot and will miss an undisclosed amount of time.

Mesoraco was hit by a pitch from Cubs starter Jose Quintana in Monday’s 15-5 loss. He had X-rays at the stadium and is returning to Cincinnati to be examined by team doctors.

"If you've got a broken foot, you can't play," Mesoraco said after the game. "It doesn't even feel remotely close to being able to play at the moment."

Mesoraco is hitting .213 this season with six homers and 14 RBIs. He opened the season on the disabled list, then had another DL stint due to a shoulder issue.

He’s been plagued by hip and shoulder problems in recent seasons, derailing what looked to be a promising career. His 55 games in 2017 are his most since 2014.
