Dayton Flyers recruit leads team to state semifinals in Minnesota

McKinley Wright’s team advances on buzzer beater

Dayton Flyers recruit McKinley Wright scored 30 points to lead Champlin Park High School to the semifinals of the Class 4A tournament in Minnesota on Wednesday.

Wright, one of five recruits in Dayton’s 2017 class, made 13 of 25 shots from the field and had eight rebounds, but it took a crazy last-second shot by teammate Sam Dubois, after a miss by Wright, to beat Chaska 53-50 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.

Champlin Park (30-0) rallied from an 11-point deficit. Wright scored eight straight points at one point in the second half to lead the comeback.

"I think McKinley is hands down the best player in the state. He's Mr. Basketball," Chaska coach Dana Kallman told Pioneer Press.com. "He's unbelievable. You saw it. He can get a shot at any time. I think he's going to go tear it up at Dayton. He'll start as a freshman, in my opinion. He's the best guy I've seen on film or in person all season long, and we've played against some pretty good players."

Champlin Park will play Wayzata in the state semifinals at 6 p.m. Thursday.
