Dayton Flyers don’t appear to be in mix for Dane Goodwin

UD great Damon Goodwin says son interested in Ohio State, Villanova and Notre Dame at this point

Dane Goodwin will be at the University of Dayton this weekend for a camp with his Upper Arlington teammates. His dad Damon, the head coach at Capital University, said he talks to the new Dayton Flyers coach, Anthony Grant, all the time. They played together at Dayton for three seasons (1983-86).

Damon's connection to UD and Grant is a big reason fans of the Flyers started debating Wednesday whether Dane, a top-100 recruit in the class of 2018, might consider Dayton after news broke Wednesday that he had decommitted from Ohio State and reopened his commitment.

However, it appears unlikely Dane will follow in his dad’s footsteps at UD. Asked about whether Dane would be interested in UD, Damon said, “As of right now, I think the schools he is interested in are Notre Dame, Villanova and Ohio State. Those are the places he’s planning to take his official visits at this point.”

Dane committed to Ohio State as a freshman in 2014. A week ago, he informed Ohio State he was reopening his commitment. The news broke Wednesday.

“We don’t have any idea how it got out,” Damon said. “Dane’s been open and honest with Ohio State. They knew about this a week ago. We were trying to keep it private. It didn’t work out that way.”

Dane reopened his commitment, Damon said, because he wants to find out more about new coach Chris Holtmann and his staff. Dane was recruited by Thad Matta, who was fired June 5.

Dayton has one scholarship open for 2018 and has offered a scholarship to another player who decommitted from Ohio State, Versailles senior Justin Ahrens.
