Covington grad and Ohio RB Ouellette MAC back of the week

A.J. Ouellette, the pride of Covington High School, continues to impress as a running back at Ohio University. He was named the Mid-American Conference East Division offensive player of the week following a 42-30 defeat of Kansas last weekend.

A 5-foot-9, 205-pound redshirt junior, Ouellette had 102 yards rushing on 10 carries and scored once against the Jayhawks. He also had a 63-yard dash. He leads with Bobcats with 203 yards rushing and two touchdowns after three games.

That was the first time Ouellette surpassed 100 yards rushing since November 2015 at Northern Illinois. That season he led OU in carries (151) and rushing yards (691). He participated in just three plays last year before suffering a season-ending injury.

OU (2-1) opens MAC play at Eastern Michigan (2-0) at 2 p.m. Saturday (ESPN3).

• Former Trotwood-Madison standout Zach Logan is in his first season as the defensive coordinator at Malone in Canton. He was a football assistant at Marietta the previous three seasons and also was the interim track and field coach.

Logan was an All-Ohio defensive back at Trotwood and two-time Division I state 400-meters champ. He had 11 career starts as a defensive back at Purdue and was All-Big Ten in the 400 for the Boilermakers.

He began his football coaching career at Trotwood and was on the staff of the 2011 D-II state title team. He also was the Rams track and field coach.

• Centerville grad Tito Odenigbo has two solo tackles and six assists as a 6-3, 300-pound redshirt junior starting defensive lineman at Illinois. He also blocked a kick at South Florida.

Odenigbo played in 11 games last season, earning his first career start at Michigan. Illinois (2-1) has a bye this week and hosts Nebraska at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29 (BTN).

Tito’s older brother, Centerville grad Ifeadi Odenigbo, is on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad. The 6-3, 258-pound defensive lineman was cut during preseason and quickly resigned. He was taken in the seventh round of the NFL draft by Minnesota after a standout career at Northwestern.

• It didn’t take Springfield grad and Wisconsin freshman receiver Danny Davis long to make a sudden impact. Davis snared a game-changing 50-yard bomb from redshirt sophomore Alex Hornibrook to help break open a 40-6 win at BYU last Saturday. It was the first time a Big Ten team had played at the Provo, Utah, campus.

Davis had two catches for 67 yards. In all, he has three catches for 102 yards for a take-notice 34.0 average per catch. Wisconsin (3-0) hosts Northwestern (2-1) at noon on Saturday (ABC).

• Miamisburg grad and Ohio State freshman Josh Myers was one of several true freshmen to receive praise from coach Urban Meyer for their scout-team efforts leading up to last Saturday’s 38-7 defeat of visiting Army. The 6-5, 305-pound guard likely is looking at a redshirt season barring injuries to the offensive line.

OSU (2-1) hosts UNLV (1-1) at noon on Saturday (BTN).

• Five girls who played golf at Springboro High School are playing college golf.

Erin Bruner (Berry College, Ga.), Morgan Eib (Ashland) and Sarah Kern (Bowling Green) are juniors, Maddie Durbin (Otterbein) is a sophomore and Hannah McCrabb (Asbury, Ky.) is a freshman.

In the 2014 season the Panthers’ girls golf team advanced to the state tournament for the first time and returned in the 2015 season. Bruner and Eib were members of one of those teams and Durbin and McCrabb advanced to state twice.
