Accomplished Hartman runs down one more goal

Greeneview senior does it all in three sports and in the classroom, but now he has focused his attention on the 400.

Ryan Hartman is a great athlete. Everyone knows that about the Greeneview senior.

Hartman stars on the soccer field, the basketball court and the track, earning headlines — deservedly so — in all three sports.

What people might not know is that Hartman is also Greeneview's co-valedictorian with a 4.53 grade-point average.

"I do what I can to keep my grades up," Hartman said.

But with 18 days of school left, Hartman has some unfinished business to attend to on the track — advancing to the Division II state finals in the 400-meter dash.

"I'm trying to do everything I can in practice to get my times down and set myself up for going to state," said Hartman, who last fall was named the Ohio Division III Player of the Year in boys soccer after guiding the Rams to their first state championship.

Last season, Hartman missed the state finals in the 400 after finishing fifth in his heat in 50.09 seconds.

This season, Hartman is already running in the 49-second range. He finished sixth at the indoor state meet in 50.62.

He's also performing well in the 100, 200 and long jump. He's 8-for-8 in the 400 this season and is 3-for-4 in the 800, an event he runs to train for the 400. He's 7-for-8 in the 200 and has seven victories in the 100 and five in the long jump.

Hartman holds school records in the 400 (50.04) and the 800 (1:58.3). He and teammates John Davenport, Matt Forte and Nick Leach hold the school record in the 800 relay (1:34.8).

Hartman said his success has come from hard work in practice. He said his coach Tim Aronhalt puts together great workouts for the Rams.

After the track season is finished, Hartman will begin preparing for his freshman soccer season at UD.

Hartman would love to run track at UD, but the school doesn't offer men's track. However, he said it will be nice to be able to concentrate on one sport.

"It's a higher level of competition," Hartman said. "I'm looking forward to the challenge."

But the senior has one more challenge in front of him — getting back to the state track meet and performing well.

"I want to be down around 48 at state," Hartman said. "It would be pretty sweet to get (in the 48s)."

Hartman will graduate June 2, the first day of the state track meet. He hopes to advance to the finals in the 400 in the morning and be ready for graduation that night.

"I've got a speech to give," Hartman said.
