RUSHYLVANIA — Junior Jocelyn Washburn kept Kenton Ridge’s title hopes alive in the Central Buckeye Conference Mad River Division by pitching a three-hit shutout to hand Benjamin Logan its first CBC loss 4-0 on Monday.
A win today against the Raiders at Kenton Ridge at 5 p.m. and the Cougars (16-7, 10-3) move to within one game for first place in the Mad River with a week of games left to go.
Washburn, struck out 10 hitters and was 2 for 4 at the plate for Kenton Ridge. She started the Cougars’ three-run first inning with a single as Nicole Massengill, Ashley Legge and Tiffany Stump all had RBIs.
In other softball action:
Graham took an 8-2 lead into the seventh inning of its CBC Mad River Division matchup with Greenon only to lose 9-8.
Senior Erin Cottrel led the Knights (4-17, 2-11) with a double and RBI and earned the complete-game win on the mound. Greenon sent 10 players to the plate in the seventh, with LeeAnn Jones scoring the winning run from second base on an error.
Meghan O’Neill threw a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts as Catholic Central (12-9) handled host Troy Christian 10-1.
Baseball
Junior Darnell Young drove in two of North’s three runs in the top of the fifth inning to help North overcome Centerville 3-2 to tie the two teams for second place in the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s East Division.
Young and Julius Storey had two hits each for the Panthers (18-3, 8-3), while Joey Borders got the victory on the mound. The Elks fell to 15-8 and 8-3. Wayne clinched the GWOC East title with a 5-0 win over Troy.
In other baseball action:
Josh Stephenson’s two-out double to left center knocked in Tyler Stephenson with the game-winner as Northwestern rallied for two runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat CBC foe Miami East 7-6.
Boys tennis
Senior singles players Brian Dredge and Andrew Moore led Urbana (16-1, 10-0) with wins in a 4-1 victory over Tipp City to stay unbeaten in the Central Buckeye Conference.
Track and field
Urbana’s Jasmine Pickett earned one of four “Top Athlete” awards at the Mohican Elite girls-only tournament in Loudonville on Saturday.
Pickett set school and meet records with a long jump of 18 feet, 1 inch, and was second in the 400 run (58.9) and seventh in the 200.
Teammate Emily Alderfer had a season-best 40-5 to win the shot put and was second in the discus (116-0).
