Udoka Azubuike leads nation in field goal percentage

When Udoka Azubuike gets the ball in the low post, odds are the ball’s going through the net.

Kansas’ sophomore center is leading the country in field goal percentage. Azubuike’s at an incredible 75.4 percent from the field. The next closest player, North Carolina Central’s Resean Davis, is at 69.9 percent, meaning that Azubuike is over five percentage points better than his closest competition. To put that in perspective, the gap between Azubuike and Davis is as big as the gap between Davis and the No. 11 player.

At 7 feet tall, Azubuike already has a built-in height advantage. But his skill and touch around the rim is undeniable. He has a knack for getting into good positions off the ball. And he’s not afraid to throw down some massive dunks if a defender allows him position on the low block.

The NCAA record for field goal percentage in a season for players that had over 50 field goal attempts was set last year by Devontae Cacok of North Carolina-Wilmington, who made 80 percent of his shots. Azubuike has a long way to go to reach that mark, but his current conversion rate is still remarkable. (Just don’t ask about his free throw percentage.)
