Saturdays are for the Cowboys.

Yes, coach Mike Boynton’s squad has seen plenty of ups and downs this season. But there is one area where Oklahoma State (14-10, 4-7 Big 12) has excelled under the first-year coach: games that fall on Saturday.

The Cowboys are 5-2 in games played on Saturday and 3-1 against ranked opponents on Saturday this season. Proof of Oklahoma State’s weekend magic came in its latest victory over Kansas in Lawrence, Kan., on Feb. 3.

Oklahoma State’s 2017-18 games on Saturday

Date   Opp W/L OSU Opp
12/9/17 No. 6 Wichita State L 66 78
12/16/17 N No. 19 Florida State W 71 70
1/6/18 Iowa State W (1 OT) 96 87
1/13/18 Texas W 65 64
1/20/18 No. 4 Oklahoma W (1 OT) 83 81
1/27/18 @ Arkansas L 65 66
2/3/18 @ No. 7 Kansas W 84 79

Oklahoma State also boasts upset wins over Oklahoma and Florida State this season. The only ranked matchup the Cowboys have lost on a Saturday came against Wichita State.

Can Boynton’s group continue the positive trend against No. 19 West Virginia on Saturday? Oklahoma State certainly proved it can run with West Virginia in an 85-79 loss to the Mountaineers earlier in the year.

If the Cowboys want to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive, however, they’ll have to find a way to win against one the most physical teams in the country at one of the toughest places to play, WVU Coliseum.

The Mountaineers (18-6, 7-4 Big 12) are back on track with two-consecutive wins after suffering five losses in six games.

Oklahoma State will need sophomore Cameron McGriff and graduate transfer Kendall Smith to continue their recent level of play. The Cowboys could also use a big performance from Jeffrey Carroll, who went 7 of 11 from the field and scored 20 points on the Mountaineers last year when the Cowboys won in Morgantown, W. Va.

The game is set for a 12 p.m. ET start on ESPN and the WatchESPN app. Rich Hollenberg and Fran Fraschilla will be on the call.
