De’Anthony Melton does not dress for USC basketball season-opener

USC’s basketball season tipped off on Friday night. It did so without the services of sophomore De’Anthony Melton.

At USC for Trojans vs CS Fullerton. No De’Anthony Melton tonight for USC. In street clothes. Statement coming after the game, per school.

Melton is one of many players around the nation who were held out of their season openers, as programs involved in college basketball’s scathing FBI investigation are keeping any players implicated in the documents on the bench. It’s unlikely that Melton’s absence will be of much consequence on Friday for the Trojans, who tip off against Cal State Fullerton.

But down the road, it could derail USC’s Pac-12 title hopes. The guard from Hollywood, Calif. averaged 8.3 points on 43.7 percent shooting last season, playing 27 minutes per game. He was also held out of USC’s scrimmages against San Francisco and San Diego State.

In a statement, USC said “As a precaution, De’Anthony Melton is being held out due to a potential issue regarding eligibility. De’Anthony is a valued member of the USC community, and USC is working diligently to independently investigate this matter in order to confirm that De’Anthony meets the NCAA eligibility requirements.”
