The Northwestern University Football team has new jerseys and they come with blood on them already, no football required.
Northwestern is using its football game against Michigan on November 16th to "raise awareness and support" for the Wounded Warrior Project — which is a non-profit organization that supports wounded veterans through programs, events and service.
But Northwestern’s new jerseys are drawing criticism from some who say the design seems to feature blood splatters across the jersey and shoes.
Deadspin has so far been the harshest critic of the alternate uniforms calling them "gore porn" and writing, "... just 10 percent of proceeds from jerseys sold will actually go to the Wounded Warrior Project … isn't 'flag covered in blood' a little on-the-nose…"
That 10% bit is true — The jerseys were designed by Under Armour and for every Wildcat jersey Under Armour sells, about $7 will go towards the Wounded Warrior Project. (via Twitter / @NU_Sports)
But Northwestern will also have an auction of the game-worn jerseys, and 100% of that money will go toward the project.
A writer for the Bleacher Report couldn't be happier with the jerseys, calling them a "… classy way to honor wounded warriors" though he didn't acknowledge the supposed blood spatter design.
But here's the thing… It's not actually blood … at least according to Under Armour. The company explained the pattern as " … an authentic distressed pattern which depicts a flag that has flown proudly over a long period of time."
And they have a point, If you look at the jersey’s blue and white side it features the same messy streaks that are supposedly blood on the red and and white side.
So is this a big blow up for nothing? Yea we think so…
