New NCAA social media rules change game in recruiting

College coaches across the nation began taking advantage of new NCAA rules regarding social media early Monday morning.

Beginning at midnight, coaches could like and share posts by recruits on social media apps such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. However, coaches are not allowed to comment on posts or tag or mention recruits in posts. In short, the NCAA allows coaches to take actions on social media that require the click of a mouse or keyboard but not posts that require typing.

For example, Dayton Flyers assistant coach Kevin Kuwik was on Twitter as soon as the rules took effect and retweeted several posts by Darryl Morsell, a guard from Baltimore being recruited by UD.

Ohio State Buckeyes wide receivers coach Zach Smith retweeted a number of posts by players who have announced verbal commitments to OSU. Prior to Monday, coaches couldn’t do that until a player had signed a national letter of intent.
