College coaches shouldn’t need GPS to find the way to Springfield

There is no shortage of Division I college prospects at Springfield this season.

Leonard Taylor has named his top 10, and fellow senior Cameron Hoelscher is looking to make his decision before the first game in August.

A pair of receivers are hoping strong starts to the season expand their options.

Caleb Johnson, a senior who transferred from Trotwood-Madison, said Western Michigan and Toledo stand out among his eight offers, but he is also getting interest from Illinois, Purdue and Kentucky.

The bigger schools have told him they would like to see his first three games before deciding if they will offer.

Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Akron, Kent State, Eastern Kentucky and Indiana State have also offered Johnson, who was the Rams' leading receiver as they advanced to the state championship game last season and lost to Akron Hoban.

Meanwhile, Diante Lesperance is just looking forward to getting back on the field. He sat out last season after transferring from Wayne, but a lack of experience has not prevented Cincinnati and Ohio from showing interest in him as an athlete.

There are some prospects in the lower classes, too, most notably Moses Douglass and Isaiah Gibson.

Douglass, a junior defensive back and the son of coach Maurice Douglass, has more than 20 offers already.

Tennessee, Pittsburgh, Ohio State and Indiana are among the places he has already visited, but he hopes to make some more trips before summer is over.

Gibson, a junior defensive tackle, camped at Ohio State last month and already has offers from Kentucky, Rutgers, Purdue, Louisville and Cincinnati, among others.
