Flyers sign 6-5 forward

Dayton picked up its first new men’s basketball recruit since its run to the Elite Eight on Wednesday when Detwon Rogers, a 6-foot-5 forward from the College of Southern Idaho, signed a national letter of intent.

Rogers visited UD from Sunday night to Tuesday morning. He also visited San Francisco and Louisiana Tech. Wichita State and Auburn were also reportedly interested in Rogers, who is eligible to play right away and will have two seasons at UD.

Rogers said he watched all of UD’s NCAA tournament games and picked the Flyers to beat Ohio State in the second round.

Rogers is originally from Raleigh, N.C. He graduated from New Hanover High School in Wilmington, N.C.

Rogers said he didn’t qualify academically out of high school. That’s why he played two seasons at a junior college. He averaged 16.7 points and 7.2 rebounds and shot 51 percent from the floor last season. He made 24-of-62 3-pointers.
