Flyers ranked 18th in final USA Today Coaches Poll

Four months after enjoying one week in the top 25, Dayton returned to the poll on Tuesday, earning one last honor for its run to the Elite Eight in March.

The Flyers, who were ranked 25th in December in the Associated Press poll after winning two of three games at the Maui Invitational, were ranked 18th in the final USA Today Coaches Poll, which came out a day after the national championship game. The AP does not release a poll after the NCAA tournament.

It’s the first time the Flyers have been ranked at the end of the season since they were 25th in 2003.

Dayton was not even receiving votes in either poll before the NCAA tournament began. By beating Ohio State, Syracuse and Stanford before losing to Florida, it finished 26-11. That’s the third-highest win total in school history, following the 1951-52 team (28-5), 1950-51 (27-5) and 2008-09 (27-8).

The No. 18 ranking is UD’s highest since it was ranked 18th on Nov. 22, 2009.

Castillo may be budding ace for Reds

Luis Castillo might be better than the Reds expected. Traded twice by the pitching-needy Marlins, Castillo has looked dynamic in Cincinnati. At times, his repertoire has amazed, showcasing potential that may have Reds fans dreaming of an eventual Hunter Greene-Castillo duo at the top of the rotation. Eno Sarris at FanGraphs took a closer look...

Bengals need first-team units to convert in D.C.

The Bengals’ first-team units haven’t stood out in two preseason games. Quarterback Andy Dalton and his offense have had four drives: Two ended in field goals, one a three and out, and another an interception. The team hasn’t capitalized in two red zone chances. What appeared to be its best drive, the opening possession against Tampa...
