Butler High School sophomore advances in U.S Open golf qualifying

Butler High School’s Austin Greaser is one step away from the U.S. Open.

Greaser, 16, advanced Thursday at a local qualifying tournament at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.

And he did in style.

Greaser birdied Nos. 17 and 18 to card a 1-under-par 71 and reach a nine-man playoff for the final four spots. The sophomore then birdied the first playoff hole to advance.

Six players in the field of 102 Thursday advanced to U.S. Open sectionals on June 5, which will finalize the field for the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills Golf Course on June 15-18. One of the 10 sectional tournament sites in the U.S. is Springfield Country Club.

Three other area players — Andrew Dorn (West Chester Twp.), Ben Sattler (Liberty Twp.) and Andy Mayhew (Oakwood High School) advanced from local qualifying May 15 at Maketewah Country Club in Cincinnati.

A total of 8,979 golfers across the country entered local qualifying tournaments.
