Browns sign kicker

The Cleveland Browns on Monday signed kicker Brett Maher.

Originally signed as an undrafted college free by the New York Jets in 2013, Maher is officially entering his first NFL season. The University of Nebraska product also has spent time on the Dallas Cowboys roster.

Maher spent the last three seasons playing in the CFL with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Ottawa Redblacks and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Last season for Hamilton, he connected on 41 of 50 field goal attempts and scored 161 points.

Browns kicker Cody Parkey, who was 20 of 25 on field goal attempts and 20 of 21 on extra points last season, has one year left on his contract.

Schebler exceeding expectations after slow start

Pitcher Tim Adleman saw a group of reporters standing by right fielder Scott Schebler’s locker at Great American Ball Park on Tuesday. “You guys waiting to talk to Babe Ruth?” Adleman asked. Schebler needs 689 home runs to catch Ruth. A more realistic goal would be leading the National League in home runs. No Red has done that since...

Lewis opposed to NFL relaxing celebration rules

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis has seen his share of touchdown celebrations having coached Chad Johnson for eight seasons and Jeremy Hill for three, but he hasn’t grown any fonder of them. On Tuesday, Lewis made it clear he was not pleased with the NFL’s decision to relax the rules of celebrations. “I’m not for that...
