Bengals sign running back

The Cincinati Bengals signed running back Brian Hill off the Atlanta Falcons practice squad today and waived rookie linebacker Hardy Nickerson.

Hill, a rookie from Wyoming, gives the Bengals some depth at running back after Jeremy Hill decided to have season-ending surgery last week and was placed on Injured Reserve on Saturday.

Atlanta drafted Hill in the fifth round, and he made the team’s 53-man roster out of the preseason, appearing in one game. The Falcons waived him Oct. 14 and re-signed him to the practice squad Oct. 17.

In three seasons at Wyoming, Hill set the school career records for rushing yards with 4,287. No Cowboys player had ever topped 3,000 before Hill arrived on campus. Hill also set the school record with 34 career rushing touchdowns, and he owns the single-season marks for rushing yards (1,860), rushing touchdowns (22) and touchdowns (22).

Nickerson, an undrafted rookie out of Illinois, played in seven games this season for the Bengals, recording two tackles on special teams.

Shelton returns to the practice squad for a second time. The Bengals originally signed him Sept. 4 before waiving him Oct. 27.

The team still has one practice squad opening, which presumably will be filled by Nickerson if he clears waivers.
