Multiple reports indicate the Reds will hire Jay Bell as their new bench coach. It was first reported by Fox Sports and confirmed by the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.
Bell spent one year as the Pirates’ hitting coach, helping lead them to their first playoff berth in two decades. He played eight seasons in Pittsburgh from 1989-96 and 18 years in all in the major leagues.
Bell was the hitting coach for the Mobile BayBears, Arizona’s Double-A team in 2012 and also worked as the Diamondbacks’ bench coach in 2005 and 2006. From 2007 to 2009, Bell worked as an advisor for the Diamondbacks during spring training. He worked with new Reds manager Bryan Price during that time because Price was the Diamondbacks’ pitching coach.
