Jocketty: Reds not in any talks to trade Phillips

Reds General Manager Walt Jocketty told MLB Network radio on Wednesday he talked to second baseman Brandon Phillips on Tuesday and told him they were not in any talks to trade him.

“I’m not saying we wouldn’t trade him,” Jocketty said. “But I told him we’re a better team with him here. Hopefully, he will decide to come to RedsFest. I think he will. He’s very close to the fans. The fans are important to him. He’s still part of the organization. I think he understands his responsibility.

The Reds also announced their coaching staff for the 2014 season on Wednesday.

Billy Hatcher returns as first base coach. Mike Stefanski is back as catching coach. The rest of new manager Bryan Price’s staff includes bullpen coach Mack Jenkins, bench coach Jay Bell, hitting coach Don Long, pitching coach Jeff Pico, third base coach Steve Smith and coach Freddie Benavides.

This will be the first season on the Major League staff for Benavides, the former Dayton Dragons manager. He will focus on infield instruction.

Second Thoughts? An All-American move might be good for UD

I used to yell “stop the ball” a lot when I coached CYO basketball. I was yelling at Wisconsin at the end of its regional semifinal game late Friday. But the Badgers let Florida’s Chris Chiozza dribble straight up the court and paid the price. Four seconds is plenty of time to get a good shot. Stop the ball! The success of the Big...
