James Ferguson was sentenced to 65 years in jail without the possibility of parole Friday, May 9.

Ferguson, 48, was convicted April 24 on 18 counts of endangering children, five counts of permitting child abuse and three counts of felonious assault in connection to the abuse of his five adopted children between 2001 and 2004.

Ferguson sat slumped in his chair, head bowed, raising it only once to speak before sentencing:

"I love the children, I miss the children, and I'm happy they're doing well."

Two of Ferguson's adopted children and five of the jurors in the case were present for Friday's sentencing.

The oldest of Ferguson's children read a statement to his adoptive father before Clark County Common Pleas Judge Richard O'Neill handed down the sentence.

"You cut me open emotionally and physically," said the 17-year-old boy. "You slapped me down but I got back up."

Ferguson's wife, Vonda Ferguson, is scheduled to face trial on similar charges July 1.
