Medical staff merge as Springfield Regional Medical Center

SPRINGFIELD — Community Hospital and Mercy Medical Center merged in 2004 to create Community Mercy Health Partners. However, medical staff of the two hospitals did not.
Today, four years after the merger, medical staff from both hospitals will merge to become medical staff of Springfield Regional Medical Center.

Hospital patients will likely not notice the change, but it's a significant one for the hospital and its approximate 300 physicians, said George Miller, Community Mercy's regional president and chief executive officer.
On April 14, Community Mercy will hold a rite of passage ceremony for the medical staff, both past and present.
"We're going to celebrate that we are coming to the end of an era and are officially one, both in legal structure and how we run day-to-day operations," Miller said.
Community Hospital and Mercy Medical Center have each been recognized among the region's leaders in superior practices in several areas of care from cardiac to surgical protocol, according to the Department of Health and Human Services. In some areas Community rates better; in others, Mercy ranks better.
The combined medical staff will take advantage of that, said Dr. Stephen Feagins, Community Mercy's vice president of medical affairs.
"We literally have had different protocol for different things. This has been an opportunity to say 'which one of these two (procedures) seem to do the best?' and use that to create one protocol," he said. "That means better care for our patients."
The historical significance of the event will be highlighted during the ceremony when the new medical staff is presented soil from both Community's campus, built in 1932 and Mercy's campus, built in 1950. That dirt will be turned into the ground during the upcoming ground breaking for Community Mercy's new hospital campus to be constructed downtown.
