CINCINNATI — When Justin Masterson was at San Diego State, he briefly met Aaron Harang, a former Aztecs pitcher.
"He probably wouldn't remember," Masterson said.

With more starts like his performance on Friday, June 13, people will certainly remember Masterson, the rookie pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. The 23-year-old Beavercreek High School graduate suffered his first big-league loss in allowing three runs on four hits (including Jay Bruce and Adam Dunn home runs) in 62/3 innings as the Reds beat Boston 3-1. He also had nine strikeouts.
Masterson, a third-year pro, is 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA after running into Harang, who improved to 3-9 by giving up one run on four hits over seven innings.
Despite the loss, most were impressed with Masterson in his fifth career start.
"He made a couple mistakes to left-handers, but other than that he was really good," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. "The bad thing for us was Harang was a little better."
