Mariners send exec to check out Griffey

COMMENT: Should the Reds trade Griffey?

Staff Writer

Monday, May 12, 2008

The Seattle Mariners covet Ken Griffey Jr., want him as much as a loving mother wants to see her children on Mother's Day.

Club President Chuck Armstrong wants the Cincinnati Reds outfielder desperately, wants him to inject excitement into the Mariners and boost attendance, because Armstrong knows Griffey is a deity in the Northwest.

Extras

That's why Duane Shaffer, a special assistant to the executive vice president, was in Shea Stadium on Sunday, May 11 — to check out Griffey.

The Mariners most likely would use Griffey as a designated hitter, something that Griffey has said in the past he wouldn't like to do. And he has said he wants to win a World Series ring before he says goodbye.

A ring isn't likely in the immediate future either in Cincinnati or Seattle, but Griffey likes to be loved, and he is more than loved in Seattle. While many fans in Cincinnati still love him, many don't.

When Griffey was asked about Shaffer's visit, he said, "Don't know the man. Never heard of him. I just live and play for the present. I've never been a what-if guy."

As a 10-and-5 player, Griffey must approve any trade, and he said, "The problem with (10-and-5) players is that by the time they come to the player, it is down to them wanting a 'yay' and a 'nay' right away."

Griffey said last week was difficult, and not because of all the trade chatter. It was mostly because of the death of his closest friend, Frank King, a victim of cancer at 38.

"Last week was the longest of my life," he said, as he laced up pink shoe laces on his pink-trimmed Nike spikes as part of annual wearing-of-the-pink by major-league players on Mother's Day to bring attention to breast cancer. The players wore pink wrist bands and several used pink bats.

"Every time I call home, she (wife, Melissa) is still crying," Griffey said.

Toeing the line

Adam Dunn played in pain Sunday, and it had nothing to do with having to face New York Mets left-hander Oliver Perez, who struck him out the first two times.

Dunn spent Sunday morning in the training room getting an infected toenail on his right foot treated.

"I never had one of these in my entire life," said Dunn as he walked gingerly to his locker to dress. "Right now, my toe is on fire."

Smith to the rescue

Wright State's Joe Smith hadn't pitched in five days when he came in Sunday for New York in the eighth inning to face Jeff Keppinger with two outs and two on, the Mets leading by four.

After falling behind 3-0, the side-arming Smith struck out Keppinger, who strikes out only once every 20.3 at-bats and had reached base eight straight times with seven hits and a walk.

"He was due to make an out," said Smith, displaying his usual modesty. "Everybody gets lucky."

The fastball that froze Keppinger was far from lucky.

Out of order

As if Corey Patterson isn't having enough problems, he made an out without batting in the ninth inning. When it was Patterson's turn, David Ross batted out of order and flied to right field. So Patterson was called out, and Ross was sent to bat again — in his correct spot.

This time Ross singled.

"He's going bad enough (.196)," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Corey didn't need that."

Quote of the day

Before Sunday's game, Baker gave a friend a food order from Sylvia's, a New York restaurant landmark, requesting chicken, shrimp, green beans and yams. After he hung up, he said, "That's for the plane ride home. I never eat airplane food. Haven't eaten it in 25 years."

Griffey should be traded now, if not yesterday, for anything, just to get rid of his salary.

Trade Griffey. Successful small market teams use their money efficiently, not spend 20% of their payroll on .250 hitters with waning power. Griff is the best I have ever seen, but that was ten years ago. There is no real argument otherwise.

If ANYONE will take Griffey…….DO IT! He has never played on a winner and he has killed this team sinse he arrived. Do you know Seattle WON 116 games the year AFTER Griffey left. He is a cancer and has never carried a team. He is alll about his personal stats, not winning. Only 200 of his 600 HR have come at Cincinnati. How many years and how many dollars to get those 200? Let him go is anyone wants that problem.

Send JR home to Seattle where he can be appreciated for his remaining years in the game. I can’t understand how some of you people can bash this guy. The team has been bad for years and everyone wants to blame Griffey and Dunn. What about the terrible pitching over the last few years? (Harang excluded the staff has sucked) Griffey and Dunn could be cornerstones for a great team. So with that being said send them both to Seattle where they can win a title or two before Grif decides to retire.

He WAS a great player, and certainly is a Hall of Famer, but the only thing he has done as a Cincinnati Red is take up a big part of the payroll. Not many “great” years as a Red. Let it go.

If I could slap every one of you #dickheads# thru my computer that disrespected Ken Griffey Jr. I would. Im sorry his 290 BA and coming up on 600 HRs is not good enough for you guys. I understand he has only a couple more years left, so send him back to his real home. The day Griffey comes back I will be there. If I didnt live four hours a way I would buy season tickets the rest of his career win or lose. I am disgusted the way cincy fans disrepect the future Hall of Famer.

Griffey blew it by becoming a Red. He’s chasing his father, when he should be leaving his own mark ….. Sorry, but Seattle is where he belongs.

By Mike

May 13, 2008 2:11 AM | Link to this

What’s worse is that the reds are eventually going to get better thanks to a few maturing young players. Volq, Votto, Cueto, Phillips are all going to make a difference. They need pitching, but the fact is they will function more as a team and less like a bunch of no-names relying on the star power of Griffey. When the Reds start winning, it will not be because Griffey is gone, but because the youngsters finally came around. Trade Griff to Atlanta to be close to his family and get his ring.

By Mike

May 13, 2008 2:06 AM | Link to this

Some of these posts are ridiculous. To be truthful, Griffey entered Cincy and got hurt…a lot. You cannot stop that. As far as Griffey being in it for the money, look at his contract offer from Seattle during his free agency. More money in the NW than Cincy…not in it for the money, but for the family. He’s got Nostalgia from his dad’s years, and his family is in an easier to reach location during spring training and the season.

Griffey is a tremendous individual player! However, he is not a winner. He has been to the playoffs one time in his career, and if I am not mistaken he was hurt for a big portion of that year. He is one of the greatest individual players to ever step on the field. Yet, he refuses to be a leader? I will miss the beauty of his homeruns, but not his lack of hustle. Enjoy Seattle Junior, you WON’T be missed here! (BRING CHAD WITH YOU)

Griffey just dropped an easy flyball that would have ended the inning but instead put the Marlins to within one. He then juggled an inning-ending flyball. I think he doesn’t give a s—t.

Cincy is just a bad team all around, the fans have to find someone to blame for their failures so why not blame it on the face of the franchise. Griffey is the only reason your 14 fans show up everyday.I dont understand the whole bash Griffey theory when you have a whole buttload of worthless talent on your roster and minors. Yes i believe Griffey should go to Seattle where fans respect a great player for what he has meant to baseball. Who would actually want to play for Cincy Fans!?

I am amazed at the lack of respect for Griffey. It is obvious that anyone that bashes him that they have little knowledge or respect for the game of baseball. Listen you yourselves?? Bashing one of the best players of our generation because his surroundings are horrible? Give me a break. So he doesnt talk openly to the media, doesnt “hit the other way when a shift is on”. He has never been that type of player. Neither was Mickey Mantle. Griffey is a class act & always has been.

I was critical of the Reds for trading Josh Hamilton. I still say BIG MISTAKE! Yes, we needed a trade to get excellent EV, but why didn’t we trade Dunn to Texas for EV? We could have tossed in Jr. to boot if they balked. The Reds NEED to get rid of Jr. and Dunn — the two oafs-in-the-outfield — ASAP. Lummox is the term one poster used to describe Dunn, a one-tool player. Griffey is tapped out, has a crap attitude, is slow and tubby. Never hustles, ddoesn’t care anymore…certainly not as a Red.

Sadly, I believe we should trade Griffey. Would like to see #600 attained first.

The Reds have been as big a disappointment as Junior - probably a bigger one. They were “promising” to become more competitive. How many “fire sales” such as the one in 2003, did they go through - when they could have gotten hot and won.

  • The team has been a MAJOR disappointment, and Junior has failed to show true leadership most of the time. Time to shine, Bob and Walt - give us some Cardinals magic.

Griffey was a basket case mentally before he came to Cincinnati. He held his privates rounding the bases to send a message to a heckler. The Reds were swayed by the gentleman his dad was. Sorry, but the same athletic ability as dad but marches to a different drum when it comes to his disposition. Trade him for a sore arm pitcher then rewlease the pitcher.

I’m iffy on Griffey. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him several times (business and personal functions) and must say that this guy is a class act, one of a kind, and worth his weight in gold (and dollars). He’s a model athlete and adores Cincy, but is also fond of Seattle as well. He’s like any one of us - who wants to be appreciated for what he does and brings to the table. I see how the very same fans who once welcomed him w/ open arms (from Seattle) now can’t wait for him to go. Keep him

Just send the kid to Seattle. did u see him hit his first multi home run game in a long time? in Seattle? his game will elevate to the next level there. for Cincy’s sake, it would save them a ton of money. big mistake to let hamilton go instead of Adam Dunn.

For God’s sake buy him a chartered ticket to Seattle for whatever you can get! His drain on the payroll since he has been here is why the Reds have STANK since he’s been here. Aside from spraining his cuticle over and over he is an “all about me” player and doesnt care about the team. Would they like a one dimensional, lumbering ox of a left fielder who cant field, hit a sacrifice fly, or won’t hit the other way when there is a shift on?

I’m not a Griffey basher, but we do need to trade him. We just need to get more athletic in our outfield. And, we haven’t done much with the same team over the past few years. It’s time for a change. I’d much rather root for a young team that is giving 100%, even if they don’t win the division, than this same team that doesn’t seem to play that hard and lose. I wish Griffey nothing but the best! But, let’s trade him, bring up Bruce, and consider trading Dunn as well.

Did people forget that one of the reasons Junior wanted to come to the Reds was to be closer to his home in Orlando? Why in the world would he want to go back to Seattle? And he wants to win a World Series ring to boot. Seattle is no closer to that than the Reds are. He may go to a team like one of the New York ballclubs, or Atlanta. Maybe a place like that. But the thought that the Reds are trading him back to Seattle is ridiculous in my opinion.

I say cut him loose to Seattle where he will get the respect a LEGIT hall of famer deserves. Cincinnatti Reds is a bad organization with a bad fan base. They are still salivating over Pete Rose when they had a Big Time Hall of famer, who sold himself short to be a Red, and they couldn’t get a team around him to win.

He’s had health issues, but this fan base is totally ungrateful and unmindful of the favor that was given to you

Griffey is one of the best players ever to play the game. That being said, the Reds must trade him. His production is on the decline, he is 39 years old, and he is not the fielder he once was. The Reds need payroll flexability to bring this team back to life. So,yes, they have to trade him and Dunn. I love Volquez but I loved Hamilton to. Should have traded Dunn for him. You can thank Stienbrenner Castellini for that one. He LOVES Adam. So, good luck Ken I wish you Well and hope you get a ring.

Time to go. Time for change and not only in politics. Let him go to Safeco for prospects like the Marlins have done with their stars, and notice how they’re doing with a 20 milliom dollar payroll. Then Junior might eventually go to another AL team as a DL and win a WS ring. The Griffey era didn’t work out for the Reds or Junior, but that’s life, so let’s all move on.

By Matt

Griffey did Cincinnati a huge favor when he signed for less than market value to come play for his hometown team. I say, do what he wants. He’s earned it. If he wants to go to a contender, eventually someone in the AL will have an DH/1B/OF injury that he can fill in for.

BTW, Freel is not an everyday player.

The Reds continue in rebuilding mode and need to pack off Griffey and Dunn to free up payroll for young players. Griffey will be loved back in Seattle or wherever he goes. Reds org has never had a problem finding capable outfielders. Maybe they can get some additional pitching help or speed by trading off Griffey and Dunn. (Do you recall that the Reds LED the NL in home runs the year before Griffey (1999)? They signed him for all that money and had to dismantle the rest of the team).

I think you should ask “Griffey” if he wants to be traded. If he is Happy in Cincinnati Let him stay and if he will be happier in Seattle let him go. If you are not happy you aren’t going to do good anyplace. You have to like what you are doing and like where you are to do good. We have let too many players go when they start playing good together and then they go on someplace else and Then there is the REDS with a Lousy season again. Trade him if you can. Too high of dollar amount to keep him. No benefit from the money spent on his salary. Not productive anymore. His effort is not contributing to a team that needs max. effort from everyone on the field to turn losing ways around. After Griffey, Dunn should be next. Not enough production from him for $13 million. Not a consistent hitter, strikes out too much and doesn’t hit with runners in scoring position- has done this every year without improving. Time to go.

First of all lets address what I feel is the real problem with the Reds and it isnt Ken Griffey,Jr.!!!!!!!!!!!! I,believe the real problem starts with the manager, Dusty Baker. He normally does a fair job with younger players ,but when it comes to managing a team of older and more experienced players he has a problem. Why not can him ,bring in a manager that can work with older players. Should have went after Joe Torre this club would be winning!!!!!!!!!

They should have traded him last summer when his value was 5 times higher than it is now. That’s one reason why Krivsky got canned…another bonehead move to hold onto an expensive, aging Griffey while trading away a talented, young, and cheap Hamilton. Griffey is a dinosaur. I’ve heard from many people that he sells tickets. I highly doubt that Griffey really makes a difference. Winning brings fans. The Tigers couldn’t pay people to watch games in ‘03, now they seat to 95% capacity every game.

No trade! Rework the contract, make him be a part of this process here, whatever it is. He hasn’t done anything for us, to deserve an accomodation. We need to get some benefit from him for clogging up the payroll for 8 years and not putting forth anywhere near the effort he put forth in Seattle. While I realize he has been hurt a lot while here, even when not hurt I don’t feel he has shown any leadership qualities. I also realize Reds management misled him a lot, but he still needs to deliver so

Get him out of here NOW! Seattle is the 1 place that might take him-that HE WOULD APPROVE. Get something for him, anything. Dump him now and then trade Dunn To Texas (not Houston. We could go from a bad outfield to a pretty good one. It will also allow Keppinger to play every day when Gonzalez returns. We can get Freel more at-bats also. Dunns numbers are pretty darn good, but put together with Griffey, Concepcion, David (I can’t hit .100 Ross), it just kills this team.

Trade him BEFORE 600 to maximize what you’ll get in return. Pay half the salary, do what you have to do.

I don’t like the attitude, the standing there admiring balls off the wall, leaving the dugout before the game ends the last game of the season, the “my way or the highway” attitude.

Do it now. Today.

I say trade him, Griffey is one of the classiest ball players I have ever had the privlege of watching. If he the shoe fits in Seattle let him go, what is the worst that could happen? The Reds get worse??? LOL!

Absolutely. I was behind him for all these years. He and Dunn are the worst outfielders on the roster, and the most expensive. Plus we could play freel everyday and dusty can continue to patronize patterson.

And Jay Bruce (and his K’s) can produce .240 with 4 HR for much much less.

Trade him to a contender, let him have a shot at a ring. He has been to good to not get a chance at a ring.

If Jr. wants to get back to Seattle, do the deal and hope he does well. Not sure how much you could expect in return for a 38 year old super star in the final stage of his career, but he could DH for a couple of years. If it is good for Jr….do it.

With the way things go for the Reds, they would trade him and he would pass Barry Bonds in three years.

Trade him to NY or Boston and let him have a legit chance at a title. It’s been fun in Cincy or Seattle, wish him well whatever he decides.
