Reds rained out in New York

Manager Dusty Baker tinkers with Reds' lineup after weather forces a doubleheader against Mets.

An all-day rain that fouled up air traffic, train traffic and automobile traffic fouled up the Cincinnati Reds-New York Mets baseball game Friday, May 9.

After waiting an hour past the 7:10 scheduled time, the game was called off, so the two teams will play a day-night, split-gate doubleheader today. The first game is scheduled for 1 p.m.; then they clear out Shea Stadium to charge separate admission for the 7:30 game.

"What a wasted day," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Life owes us all an extra day of our lives after this one."

Matt Belisle faces Johan Santana in the first game and Bronson Arroyo faces Mike Pelfrey in the second game.

After the postponement announcement, Baker spent considerable time writing lineups for the two games on a yellow legal pad, "Trying to figure out how to win both these games," he said.

He had every position player but catcher Javier Valentin written on his two lineups.

Ken Griffey Jr. was scratched from Friday's lineup because he was sick, "But Junior wants to play both games (today)," Baker said. "I'm not sure that's a good idea for him, getting cold after playing the first game then trying to play again."

Baker hopes the two days off help heal second baseman Brandon Phillips' sore calf; Phillips left Wednesday's game after fouling a pitch off his leg.

Asked if he'll play Saturday, Phillips said, "I hope so."

The Reds are trying to snap a five-game losing streak on the road after taking two of three from the Chicago Cubs this week in an abbreviated three-game homestand.
