Palmer's OSU rant shows a lapse in judgment
Wednesday, July 23, 2008
Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer, a proud Southern Cal alum, went too far in his rant against Ohio State.
Yes, he's since backpedaled and it was mainly all in fun, but I don't think he was smiling when he said what he said and it came off as vicious. "I can't believe he ripped the Buckeyes like that," one disheartened OSU fan who also roots for the Bengals told me Tuesday. "He's right in the heart of Buckeye nation!"
In case you missed it, Palmer said this, among other things, to a Los Angeles radio station:
"I cannot stand the Buckeyes. It's amazing to hear what those guys think about that university and what they think about that football program and (OSU coach Jim) Tressel and all the crap I gotta put up with being back there. ... I'm really getting sick of it."
It was as vitriolic a tirade as anyone's heard out of Palmer on any subject.
I laughed at first because it's amusing when athletes say stupid stuff. Then I started to think about it. Palmer is a quarterback. He's paid to show good judgment on and off the field. Normally, he does, but in this case he didn't.
Note to Carson: It's probably wise to put down the pompoms when you leave school, OK?
Browns receiver Braylon Edwards, who attended Michigan, learned this lesson quickly, realizing many of the same fans who pull for the Browns are also rabid OSU rooters.
It's tempting to chide OSU fans for getting in a snit about what somebody says about their school. I mean, grow up already. You're not on High Street anymore.
But I think maybe they have a point in this case.
